How Door and Window Contact Sensors Improve Home Security

What opening detection tells you, and how to make it useful.

What an opening sensor tells you

A contact sensor uses two parts fitted at an opening. It can report when the watched door or window opens or closes. That does not prove someone has broken in. It also does not mean the sensor can notice broken glass, a cut grill or every type of damage. Keep using suitable physical locks.

Check the frame and how it moves

A hinged door and a sliding window may need different sensor positions. The parts must fit without blocking normal use. We check the frame, surface and movement before suggesting a product. The product’s own fitting instructions matter. A sensor that looks suitable in a picture may not fit every opening.

Choose clear names and useful times

Names such as back door or bedroom window make phone alerts easier to understand. Decide when you want updates and which normal openings should not interrupt you. Available schedules and settings depend on the chosen app. Test an opening with your phone so you can see what the alert actually says.

Keep doing simple checks

Ask how to check the battery information your device provides. Test opening and closing from time to time, especially after moving a sensor or changing a frame. Wireless sensors often need no new sensor wires, but the hub may still need power. We explain the fitting and connection needs before installation.
